What I do and how I started.
Working as Head Designer for top market UK furniture manufacturer and retailer, Mark Wilkinson Furniture, I have a love of natural materials, in this case timber, stone, glass and metals. My jewellery is a natural progression of this affection using some of the same materials. I have faced a complete bathroom with Lapis Lazuli and adroned necks with the same semi-precious material but on a much smaller scale. The end result is just as spectacular in its beauty and as satisfying to me as a designer and maker.
I started to make jewellery in November 2007 quite by accident. I was looking for a necklace for myself for a Christmas party. Trawling the internet, jewellery magazines and the shops I could find nothing suitable in either style or price. Browsing on a newsagents stand, a picture caught my eye of something close to what I had in mind, and found it was a beading magazine and the necklace was a 'to do' project. I reasoned that I could adapt it and set about drawing what I had in mind and calculated the materials, which consisted of Stirling Silver, Jet and Swarovski Crystal. Sourcing from the magazine, which was an american issue, I placed my orders and waited hopefully for it all to arrive, which it did with remarkable speed.
Slowly it began to take shape and I was totally enthralled with the process. There were a couple of blips on the way. Learning how to do wrapped loops, open and close jumprings accurately and not overwork the silver so it became brittle and failed. Through lack of experience I found that some of the materials I had ordered were not up to the job to carry, what ended up being, a very heavy piece. But I took it apart, ordered new materials and finished it with just a couple of days to spare. The sense of acheivement was fantastic. I wore it
proudly and it caused a lot of comment. In hindsight there are minor aspects I would alter if I were ever to repeat the design but on the whole I was happy with it. I was hooked. I ordered a selection of materials and had great fun playing with them over the Christmas holidays and when I showed people my designs the feedback was very positive. I made a few pieces for friends and then it started to take over all my free time.
My web site is a natural progression to get my designs 'out there' and see if anyone apart from my friends and family, like them enough to want to part with their hard earned cash to own a piece of MornieG Jewellery. So fingers crossed, and I do hope you find something to your liking.
Thank you for taking the time to browse my web site.
